Best Snorkeling Spots In Bali

SNORKLINGLESSONS

You might not be a diver, but still are consumed with curiosity as what the life looks like under the water; or you might be too afraid to rely on a tube on your back as the only source of oxygen for some time. Luckily enough there’s a very simple to use equipment which fills the bill for everyone who wants to explore (to some point) the beauty of the underwater life. A snorkel and a mask 🙂 These are my favourite accesories whenever my holiday destination is southeast Asia. And in this article I wil show you the best snorkeling spots in Bali.

If we’re considering the coral reefs along Bali itself, the best places to snorkel are:

1. PADANG BAI

There are actually two popular snorkeling spots in here – one of them is Blue Lagoon – a very crowded beach, especially during high season. Here you can start snorkeling from the shore. Another one is called Tanjung Jepun, however, located far from the shore so you will need to rent a boat to reach that point.

2. NUSA DUA and PADANG PADANG BEACH

Those two places are perfect for newbees. Nusa Dua as a snorkeling point is recommended to those who are staying in the nearby resorts. The sea along this coastline is very calm, making it a nice snorkeling spot for those who don’t pretend to see manta rays or shipwrecks 🙂

Padang Padang Beach is also nice for snorkeling. With a high tide you will never get bored finding new coral caves and colourful fish hiding inside. Besides, it’s a good spot for those who are staying in Kuta or in the vecinity.

3. AMED and TULAMBEN

In Amed, just as in Blue Lagoon, you can start snorkeling from the shore. Don’t be discouraged by the colour of the sand which is black cause once you stuck your head under the water, you will remain amazed.

In Tulamben you have a chance to see one of the most famous shipwrecks – United States Army Transport Liberty, referred to as “Liberty”. The shipwreck is located in very shallow water – you just have to swim a little bit off the shore to admire its corals and marine life around it.

However, there are three more spots not so far away from Bali where snorkeling is equally enjoyable if not better:

4. MENJANGAN ISLAND (LA ISLA MENJANGAN)

This uninhabited island is located within West Bali National Park in the north west part of Bali. This place is perfect for those of you who are looking for a more secluded adventure. You will find varied marine life here and according to some data more than 100 unique species of coral along underwater cliff which will surely take your breath away when you see pitch black immensity in front of you.

You can reach the island in 30 minutes by boat from Labuan Lalang or Pemuteran.

5. NUSA LEMBONGAN and NUSA PENIDA

To get to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida, you have to rent a boat as these are two islands situated south to Bali. Nusa Lembongan Island is a great getaway for those of you who want to escape the crowds of Padang Padang and Uluwatu. It will only take you around 30 minutes to get there from Sanur. Once you reach the island, I would recommend to head to Mangrove Point, where you can admire beautiful, long corals and cute little colourful fish.

Nusa Penida Island is less popular, which does not mean worse. It’s more tranquil and perfect for those who like to experience authentic local life. Head to Crystal Bay where you can enjoy floating on the water with your snorkel and observe fish swimming among shallow corals.

REMEMBER – if you don’t have your own snorkeling gear, you will need to rent one beforehand.
And always ask locals when is the best time to go snorkeling in each spot, since it depends on the currents and the weather.
